Offered together are two antique literary volumes published in London by H. G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden, in decorative bindings.The Works of Francis Rabelais, Vol. I – Francis Rabelais, translated from the French by Sir Thomas Urquhart and Motteux, with explanatory notes by Duchat, Ozell, and others. A new edition, revised and with additional notes. Published by H. G. Bohn, London, 1849. Includes an engraved portrait frontispiece of Rabelais.The Exemplary Novels of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra – translated from the Spanish by Walter K. Kelly and published by H. G. Bohn, London. Includes an engraved portrait frontispiece of Cervantes.The two books have complementary decorative bindings with gilt ornamentation, marbled endpapers, and leather spines with gilt lettering and decoration. They appear to have been part of the same personal library and are being offered together as a pair.Condition: These are antique books showing substantial age and binding wear. Both have detached or separated boards/covers, with deterioration and losses to portions of the leather spines and hinges. The Rabelais volume has particularly significant loss to the lower portion of the spine covering. The Cervantes volume also has separation at the binding and wear and loss to the leather. Pages show expected age toning, occasional spotting and other signs of age. Previous-owner markings/bookplate are present. The engraved portrait pages and interior text remain attractive.Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and show the bindings, detached covers, interior pages, title pages, portraits, and overall condition.
