Roman Republic silver denarius serratus attributed to Gaius Marius C. f. Capito, struck at Rome circa 81 BC.
The obverse depicts the draped bust of Ceres facing right, wearing a grain wreath. The inscription appears to read CAPIT•CXVIIII, with CXVIIII representing the control number 119. A small control symbol appears below the chin, although its precise identification is uncertain.
The reverse depicts a ploughman guiding a pair of yoked oxen to the left. The matching control number above the scene appears to read CXVIIII (119). Below are the inscriptions C•MARI•C•F, naming the moneyer, and S•C, meaning “by decree of the Senate.”
This is a denarius serratus, featuring an intentionally serrated edge characteristic of the issue. The edge serrations are part of its original manufacture.
