Large format hardcover in VG condition with a good+ dust jacket. Crack to gutter between the front pastedown and half title page brings the volume down from near fine, though the binding remains sound overall and the interior is otherwise exceptionally clean and bright. Appears inscribed and signed by several contributors on the half title page dated 1977. Jacket shows light edge wear, a few small stains, and mild handling wear. Large 9.5 x 13 inch format. 454 pages.
Substantial clothbound art volume printed in Bucharest during the Socialist Republic of Romania period and richly illustrated throughout with full page color plates and black and white reproductions spanning medieval iconography through twentieth century Romanian modernism. Heavy coated stock, wide margins, elegant typography, and high production values throughout. Includes sections on old painting, nineteenth century painting, modern painting, and contemporary Romanian painting, with additional coverage of folk costume imagery, miniatures, embroidery, wood carving, and peasant glass painting referenced on the jacket. Jacket and interior design are striking examples of late Cold War Eastern European art publishing.
An impressive and increasingly elusive survey of Romanian visual culture produced for both domestic and international audiences during the 1970s. The text traces the evolution of Romanian painting from Byzantine influenced religious traditions through the nationalist and modernist movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The combination of scholarly overview, lavish illustrations, and signatures from apparent contributors gives this copy unusual character beyond a standard reference volume. Scarcer in English language issue and especially desirable in this oversized format with jacket present.
