SPANAM, INDIAN WARS, M1881, HELMET PLATE, 10th REGIMENT, NY NATIONAL GUARD
These are two different New York National Guard (N.G.S.N.Y.) uniform badges belonging to the 10th Battalion / 10th Regiment (Albany, New York), dating from the Indian Wars to Spanish-American War era (circa 1880s–1890s).
1. Model 1881 Spiked Helmet Plate (Large Badge with Eagle)
Type: Dress Helmet Plate (M1881 format).
Identification: Die-stamped brass featuring an eagle atop a globe crest, a central shield displaying the New York State coat of arms with silver/nickel applied "10" numerals, and a bottom scroll reading "EXCELSIOR" (the official New York state motto).
Function: Worn on the front of the dark blue dress helmet by members of the 10th Regiment / Battalion N.G.S.N.Y.
2. Model 1895 Forage Cap / Fatigues Insignia (Small Horizontal Badge)
Type: Cap / Insignia Badge.
Identification: Features the same New York shield at center, flanked by rectangular side panels reading "10" on the left and "BATT.N" (Battalion) on the right.
Function: Worn on the front of the fatigue cap (forage cap / kepi / M1895 visor cap) during non-parade duty.
Backing Construction: The reverse shows die-stamped hollow brass construction with original wire loops/lugs soft-soldered onto the back to secure the badge to the helmet. Solder is correct for this time period. The original wire loops/lugs on the back are intact, Lugs are also intact which is a big plus.
These brass plates were typically worn on the front of full-dress felt helmets (such as the Model 1881 dress helmet) or specialized parade headgear by New York state militia and National Guard cavalry units between the late 1870s and early 1900s (spanning the Indian Wars and Spanish-American War eras).
Includes three New York (N.G.S.N.Y) buttons of various sizes.
Includes hand written note from the original owner which states that the was owned by COL. Horatio Porter Stacpole, 10th BN, 10th Reg. This warrants further research.
The 10th Regiment of Albany was reorganized as the 10th Battalion, N.G.S.N.Y. in December 1881, which explains the "BATT.N" designation on the cap badge paired with the 10th numerical designation on both pieces.
