Lovely EF specimen, exceptionally well preserved for a frequently encountered crude and heavily circulated large Byzantine bronze folli. The imposing facing portrait is unusually bold, with the crown, consular robes, mappa and eagle-tipped scepter all clearly articulated. The reverse is exceptionally well centered, with the massive denomination mark, cross, regnal date and CONA mintmark all remarkably complete and legible. Virtually flawless fields free of contact marks and other excessive handling/wear as these typically come. Both sides are covered in an attractive steel-brown and earthen green patina, with subtle variations in color lending considerable depth to the surfaces. The fields retain a naturally ancient texture without the appearance of aggressive modern enhancement. Particularly impressive is the preservation of the devices around the periphery, where these large Byzantine folles so frequently suffer from weak striking and extensive environment damage.Historical Background:
Tiberius II Constantine ruled the Byzantine Empire during a period of enormous military and financial pressure. His reign followed the long rule of Justin II and preceded that of Maurice Tiberius, and much of his government was occupied with the difficult wars against the Sasanian Persians, the Avars and other enemies along the empire\'s frontiers.
The enormous bronze follis was the principal workhorse denomination of Byzantine daily commerce. Its great size, often 30mm+, made it one of the most visually imposing coins of late antiquity.
The emperor\'s facing portrait is presented not as an individualized naturalistic likeness, but as an official image of imperial authority. His consular costume and ceremonial implements reinforce his role as both emperor and chief magistrate. On the reverse, the enormous M represents the denomination of 40 nummi, while the cross above it reflects the Christian character of the Byzantine state.
The regnal date is particularly useful historically: Year 7 corresponds to AD 580/581, placing this coin near the final years of Tiberius II\'s short reign. Specialized references confirm the Year 7 Constantinople series and its various officinae.Collector\'s Note:
