Historic Remembrance presents for your consideration

1917 Second Printing Thus Spake Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche — Modern Library No. 9 — Boni & Liveright

An unusually well-preserved early Modern Library edition of Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spake Zarathustra, translated from the German by Thomas Common. Published in New York by Boni & Liveright, Inc., this copy is a stated Second Printing, September 1917, issued as Modern Library No. 9. The main text runs to 325 pages, followed by the publisher’s rear catalogue.

Originally published in German during the 1880s, Thus Spake Zarathustra is Nietzsche’s influential philosophical work exploring self-overcoming, morality, religion, culture, and the creation of values. Thomas Common’s translation was an important early English-language version of the work.

This copy is bound in the publisher’s flexible leatherette/semi-wrap format and retains its handsome decorative endpapers with unusually strong color. An excellent selection for collectors of Friedrich Nietzsche, early Modern Library issues, philosophical literature, and classic translations.

Condition

Very good to near-fine vintage condition overall.

• Flexible leatherette/semi-wrap covers show only very minimal rubbing, scuffing, or handling wear.

• Binding is sound and secure.

• Spine is excellent.

• Hinges are intact and holding firmly.

• Decorative endpapers retain beautiful, strong color.

• Rear endpaper bears “RP 25,” likely a period retail-price notation.

• Main text runs through page 325, followed by the publisher’s rear catalogue.

• Leaves show only very mild foxing and/or expected age-related toning.

• Text block is crisp, clean in appearance, and fully legible.

• A small handful of very light underlining-type marks were observed in the text; these do not materially detract from readability or the book’s overall presentation.
