Offered for sale is an original c1910 Leland Stanford Jr. / Stanford University tobacco leather, dating to the early 20th-century tobacco-premium era.
This large-format leather measures approximately 3.5” × 2.5” and features a striking red background with a silver/white portrait and large lettering reading:
“LELAND STANFORD JR.”
Stanford University was founded by Leland and Jane Stanford as a memorial to their son, Leland Stanford Jr., making this portrait design an especially interesting piece of early Stanford-related memorabilia.
The combination of a named historical portrait, bold Stanford-red coloration and large tobacco-leather format makes this a distinctive example compared with the more common building and school-emblem designs.
Condition: Original antique condition with age-related surface wear, fading and areas of loss to the silver/white portrait printing, particularly around the face and lower portrait area. There are additional small marks, edge wear and other signs of age. The red background remains strong and the LELAND STANFORD JR. lettering displays very well.
No cleaning or restoration has been attempted.
Please review the photo carefully for exact condition. You will receive the exact tobacco leather pictured.
An unusual early piece for collectors of Stanford University, Leland Stanford Jr., California history, antique tobacco premiums, college leathers and early collegiate memorabilia.
