Important and extensively illustrated first edition of Wilhelm Gesenius\'s landmark study of Phoenician language, writing and inscriptions. Published in Leipzig in 1837, this monumental work helped establish the systematic scholarly study of Phoenician epigraphy.
COMPLETE COPY containing all three parts, including the complete Pars Tertia atlas bound following the 481-page text. The collation is complete with 48 (recte 46) lithographed plates, several double-page. The plates reproduce and analyze Phoenician, Punic, Carthaginian, Numidian and related inscriptions, alphabets, coins and archaeological monuments.
The work includes Gesenius\'s extensive examination of Phoenician paleography, inscriptions, language, vocabulary, coins, religion and related ancient writing systems. The atlas is particularly important, providing a large visual corpus of the inscriptions available to scholars at the time.
An early ownership inscription reads “James Riddell / Ball. Coll. Oxon. / 1852,” indicating Balliol College, Oxford provenance. The inscription appears consistent with James Riddell (1823–1866), the noted classical scholar, Fellow and Tutor of Balliol College.

CONDITION:
Complete internally, including the full 481-page text and complete Pars Tertia plate section. The sewn text block remains sound. Interior pages and lithographed plates are generally clean and very good for a book published in 1837, with scattered age toning, foxing and occasional spotting more so to the preliminary leaves.
Binding is in need of restoration. The spine covering is missing and both front and rear boards are detached, although both original boards are present. The text block itself remains bound and sound. Original marbled pastedowns/endpapers are present. Early ownership inscription and small old stamp/mark to title page as shown.
An unusually desirable survival because the complete atlas is present; copies are encountered with the plate section incomplete or entirely separated from the text.
