Beautiful antique Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (Japanese, 1797–1861), showing an elegant woman standing in water beneath blossoms and reaching toward flowering plants along the riverbank.
This image is identifiable as a single sheet from “Yamashiro no kuni Ide no Tamagawa” / “The Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro Province,” from an untitled triptych series of the Six Jewel Rivers. The design is a wonderful example of Kuniyoshi’s bijin and landscape work, combining a graceful female figure, flowering branches, patterned kimono, flowing blue water, and fine Edo-period textile detail.
Kuniyoshi is one of the major ukiyo-e printmakers of the 19th century, best known for warrior prints, actor subjects, beautiful women, landscapes, humor, and highly inventive compositions. Here, the appeal is quieter and more lyrical: the woman’s pose, the blossoms, and the moving water create a refined seasonal scene with strong decorative presence.
This is one sheet from the original triptych composition, not the complete three-sheet triptych. Museum and sale records identify the full triptych as The Ide Jewel River in Yamashiro Province / Yamashiro no kuni Ide no Tamagawa, with each sheet approximately oban size.
