Description
The “1908” year is a tribute design rather than the founding year of the professional Los Angeles Wildcats.
The real Los Angeles Wildcats were part of the first American Football League in 1926, not 1908. They existed for only one season and were one of the more unusual teams in early professional football.
J.C. Freeman appears to have taken some artistic license with the “1908” date as part of its “Authentics Era 1900–1950” collection rather than trying to create exact historical reproductions.
The fascinating history —
The Los Angeles Wildcats were unlike almost every football team ever created.
They were:
* Founded in 1926
* Members of the original American Football League (not today’s AFL)
* Named after college football star George “Wildcat” Wilson
* Officially represented Los Angeles…
* …but never actually played home games in Los Angeles
Instead, they were essentially a traveling all-star team that trained in Illinois while representing the West Coast. Their roster consisted largely of players from colleges west of the Rocky Mountains. They finished 6-6-2 before folding when the league collapsed after its inaugural season.
That unusual history is one reason original Wildcats memorabilia is extremely scarce today.
